One Planet Living at CSD19

News from N.Y.

Week 1 of the 19th session of the UN Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD-19) is almost over and there seems only limited progress redrafting the Chair’s negotiating text on the 10 Year Framework of Programmes (10YFP) on Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP). The most active delegations, which include G77, US, EU and Switzerland, battle over text amendments, while Major Groups fight to get their voices heard with significantly reduced intervention time - in the last 10 years time allotted for Major Groups to speak in the main plenary has been reduced from 12 hours to 9 minutes during CSD! But we persevere to get One Planet Living on the world’s agenda and are pushing for the One Planet Living Framework (number 15 out of 29 proposed initiatives) to be retained and implemented under the 10YFP.

Yesterday BioRegional held a One Planet Living workshop at a Partnership Fair for delegates at the CSD. After a short presentation by Sue, we focussed on how the 10 principles could be implemented by governments at a national level and what kind of factors need to be considered to establish effective One Planet Living Country Plans. The organising UN partner said it was the ‘funnest’ Partnership Fair that she had attended and it ‘really made participants think’, which was great feedback; I think we are getting pretty good at this!

Today we have meetings with the Switzerland and UK delegates, to talk about the possibility of their governments adopting One Planet Living as part of their National Sustainability Strategies. We will report back on progress…
