Inspiring environmental champions through London 2012
28.03.2011
BioRegional is one of four organisations awarded funding by Defra to deliver projects that use the London 2012 story to inspire more sustainable lifestyles. The One Planet Experience project will feature two interactive sustainability centres to inspire local community leaders, OIympians and Paralympians to save energy, reduce waste and to become environmental champions.
The first One Planet Experience centre will open its doors to community leaders and local residents at the BedZED eco-village in Sutton in June 2011. The centre will tell the London 2012 sustainability story, inspiring visitors to live greener lifestyles, and helping Sutton residents to feel more connected with the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games.
A second centre will open during the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, supported by Olympic sponsor Coca-Cola, and will encourage athletes to make sustainability pledges and champion sustainable behaviours in their communities.
Launching the Inspiring Sustainable Living projects at the Olympic Park today, Caroline Spelman Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, said: "London 2012 is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to inspire change. These projects will contribute by making a practical difference in the community and leave a lasting green legacy."
BioRegional Executive Director Sue Riddlestone said: “Having been involved with London 2012 since working on the bid-stage sustainability strategy, it is a real honour for BioRegional to continue that work by developing a One Planet Experience visitor centre in two locations.
“Thanks to Defra’s funding, the One Planet Experience represents a unique opportunity to use the London 2012 sustainability story to inspire local community leaders and Team GB Olympians and Paralympians to adopt pro-environmental behaviours and to become environmental champions.”
The One Planet Experience has also been granted the prestigious London 2012 Inspire mark, the badge of the London 2012 Inspire programme which recognises exceptional and innovative projects inspired by the 2012 Games.
Seb Coe, Chair, London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games said: “The Inspire programme is ensuring the legacy of the 2012 Games starts now as projects like the One Planet Experience are enabling people in Sutton to make positive life changes.”
