Aspiring zero carbon suburb shares retrofit tools
BioRegional is sharing a new free tool and research to help local authorities, housing associations and community groups work out the best options for retrofitting buildings to produce low or zero carbon emissions. The resources are part of the major Zero Carbon Hackbridge project where this 2,400 home London suburb is working to retrofit all buildings to zero carbon by 2025.
The Energy retrofit tool for buildings allows users to model the outcomes of different energy retrofit strategies on domestic building stock in an area. It can be used for projects of any size, from one building upwards. The tool will show costs, carbon savings, payback periods, value for money and remaining carbon emissions.
Joanna Marshall Cook, BioRegional’s Energy Manager, said
“To get Zero Carbon Hackbridge off the ground we carried out extensive research into the available options and are now working on delivering our preferred strategy which is to integrate behaviour change, a light retrofit of buildings, building integrated PV and district heating. But there is not a one size fits all solution for projects and we hope others undertaking similar projects will be able to take our resources and work out the best options for them”.
Sarah Butler-Sloss, Chair of Trustees, Ashden Trust and on behalf of the Climate Change Collaboration who have funded the project, said
“A zero-carbon Hackbridge would bring great benefits for the people living and working there; but beyond this the tool developed by BioRegional can help other communities to develop energy retrofit strategies. We were very pleased to support this project.”
Further research available is the Area based strategy to achieve zero carbon in Hackbridge which applies to all buildings in the suburb both domestic and commercial. And a feasibility study for connecting existing flats to district heating systems in the area – Retrofitting District Heating Systems, the approach can be applied to other building types.
