Case study: One Planet Living in West Sussex

Client: West Sussex County Council

West Sussex County Council (WSCC) is responding to the challenges of one planet living by evaluating their sustainability strategies and investigating their future strategy. BioRegional helped provide a cross-cutting picture of the Council and the County’s current carbon and ecological footprints and proposed an approach that establishes a longer-term vision for the County based on one planet living.

This work calculated the projected impact that current local and national targets have on the carbon and ecological footprints of WSCC and the County as a whole and investigated how current targets and policies sit within a wider framework of action on sustainability encompassing environmental, social and economic issues.

Results showed that the procurement of goods and services was the largest component within the Council’s environmental impacts, larger than both the energy and transport impacts combined. This finding shows how important the practice of sustainable procurement is, and BioRegional have recommended a series of innovative ways in which the Council can begin to implement best practice procurement, together with tackling energy and transport impacts.
