Case study: Wembley Northlands

Client: ESD (now Camco)

BioRegional’s practical experience and extensive research in developing pioneering community developments helped to inform the development of the Wembley Northern Lands site. This is part of the £4 billion redevelopment of Wembley, one of the largest redevelopment projects in Europe.

A series of workshops and pre-assessments, delivered in partnership with ESD ensured compliance with national, regional and local sustainability requirements. Analysis of the site showed that almost half the carbon impacts of this development would be due to lifestyle issues, including transport, waste disposal, and food consumption.

BioRegional modelled the varying impacts of different transport, waste, and food strategies and provided a commentary on the policy context and technical aspects. This included the modelling of different scenarios, appraisal of different solutions to achieve reductions in emissions and guidance on implementation-related issues. Key areas were identified for improvement beyond existing requirements, as future-proofing against policy changes over the 20 year build out.

The focus was on how to make it easy and convenient for residents to live more sustainably.

Date of completion: April 2008
