Addressing sustainable development requires not only education and explanation, but the provision of relevant, inspiring and practical solutions with which people can engage in a meaningful way.
The former Irish Glass Bottle Site is a 25 acre site, positioned in the heart of the Dublin Docklands is to be redeveloped into a mixed use development. BioRegional were involved in integrating sustainability into the master planning process and this work used the One Planet Living principles to develop recommendations to achieve current best practice, such as the Code for Sustainable Homes and BREEAM, in sustainable community development, including an energy strategy, sustainable water and transport strategies.
The output sustainability action plan outlined a vision and plan that considered both technology and lifestyle solutions for the new community. The targets and outline strategies that were developed were broken down into aspirational aims and highlighted those which were achievable in the local context and cost requirements. Examples include a detailed strategy for reducing the impact of construction and waste generation, and ensuring lifestyle impacts are minimised through provision of exemplar transport, energy and waste design and facilities.
