Case study: Haringey Heartlands

Client: ESD (now Camco)

The London Development Agency (LDA) and National Grid Property Ltd together with the London Council of Haringey plan to develop a concept for the Haringey Heartland to become the new civic and cultural heart of Haringey, helping to link the western and eastern parts of Haringey and to enhance the area for the local community.

Using the One Planet Living framework, BioRegional developed a comprehensive sustainability strategy to address the various aspects of ecological footprint while moving towards social equity and local economic development. The strategy explores how the Greater London Authority’s Supplementary Guidance on Sustainable Design and Construction can be met and exceeded; this covers a greywater recycling strategy, maximising sustainable transport, maximising the utility of the roofs (to include rooftop allotments, and green and brown roofs), and a long term management plan to promote behaviour change of the residents, covering food, waste and transport. Finally, strategies to mitigate against climate change; such as dual aspect, pale surfaces and vegetation were covered in the strategy.
