Case study: Green roofs research and trials

Client: WRAP

Green roofs can offer a range of benefits to a building such as the creation of new habitats for wildlife, effective management of storm water run-off, reduced heating and cooling demand inside buildings, reduction of the urban heat island effect and the filtration and absorption of pollutants in the air.

Although these benefits are widely recognised, there is less publicly available information on the design and selection of the substrate layer, also known as the vegetation support course. This component of a green roof is essential to determining the vegetation growth and performance of the roof. BioRegional are working with WRAP and Enviros to understand the interaction and effect of using compost as part of the substrate layer in green roofs. This work has involved conducting roof trials, laboratory research, and consultation with leading green roof experts in the UK and across the world.
