BioRegional

Case study: Future Brixton

Client: Lambeth Council

Brixton is an iconic and internationally renowned part of London, with a rich history, unique identity and strong sense of community. Lambeth Council are in the process of developing a masterplan for the town centre and BioRegional have been involved in assessment of the Future Brixton Visioning Framework document, helping to ensure sustainability becomes a key underlying theme for all proposals and strategies for the area.

A workshop was run with key stakeholders to develop ideas for a holistic approach to sustainability in the emerging masterplan. This fed into the masterplan development process with recommendations including the investigation of community renewables projects, creating creative spaces for establishing urban food growing, establishing building material reuse centres, cycle parking areas, and biodigesters for waste management that enable the generation of compost.

Subsequently, BioRegional contributed to the writing of the Masterplan document, integrating sustainability principles into the framework and creating a bank of project ideas for Brixton that align with the ten principles of One Planet Living. This work drew from BioRegional’s experience and work with other regeneration areas, developers, boroughs and organisations across the world that are working towards the one planet living vision.
