Case study: Designing out waste in construction

Client: WRAP

BioRegional are dedicated to providing viable, practical, replicable solutions in sustainable construction, and as part of this, have an extensive history of finding ways to reduce and manage waste in construction. Working with WRAP, BioRegional carried out a number of design reviews of exemplar projects to form case studies that demonstrate how waste minimisation can be achieved in practice by design teams.

This work involved working closely with 6 projects teams (clients, designers, contractors) to identify opportunities on live construction projects to design out waste. Projects included new build and refurbishment of schools, universities, flood schemes and commercial properties. Opportunities investigated include offsite construction of facilities such as toilets, eliminating of paint through materials selection, and the reuse of materials for landscaping. These projects helped identify waste savings of 21,600 tonnes, with carbon savings of 2,670 tonnes CO2 and cost savings of £755,000.

Date of completion: May 2009
