Overview
BioRegional started life in the UK, and our head office is here at the BedZED eco-village.
From our head office we operate our consultancy, education and policy work, and coordinate UK and international programmes of practical demonstration projects, including the One Planet programme.
We currently employ around 35 staff in the UK, with the team headed up by BioRegional's Executive Director Sue Riddlestone.

Finding us

Public transport connections to our offices are very good and are by far the better environmental option, however if you need to travel by car please call beforehand so that we can reserve you a car parking permit. If all permit spaces are in use we will direct you to a space outside of BedZED. You'll find a map to our office above, and also on OpenStreetMap.
- By rail: Direct trains to Hackbridge station from Victoria (20 mins) London St Pancras Domestic (41 mins). Turn right out of station. BedZED is 5 minutes walk down London Road (A237).
- By bus: No. 127 from Purley to Tooting (stops on either side of London road near to BedZED) via Wallington rail station and Hackbridge.
- By tram: Tramlink from Croydon or Wimbledon to Mitcham Junction station. Turn left out of station. BedZED is 15 minutes walk down London Road (A237).
- By bicycle: Follow the car route, there is good provision for cycle storage.
- By foot: If you are travelling from London go to www.walkit.com/london to get a walking route.
- By car: BedZED is on the east side of London Road (A237), opposite New Road, 1km north of Hackbridge station.
Trustees
Professor Sir Ghillean Prance - Patron
Sir Ghillean is Scientific Director of the Eden Project in Cornwall, Visiting Professor at Reading University; President of Christians in Science was elected Fellow of the Royal Society in 1993 and awarded the Victoria Medal of the Royal Horticultural Society in 1999. He has served as President of the Linnean Society, the Systematics Association and the Institute of Biology.
UK Board of Trustees
BioRegional’s trustees are responsible for controlling the management and administration of the charity. They serve as volunteers and receive no payment for their work.
The trustees meet at least four times a year as a Board, with senior management in attendance, and get involved between meetings in important decisions, legal and financial matters and give specific advice or help in their areas of expertise. They may also be involved in business planning events. The trustees undertake to actively ensure that the organisation is operating effectively within its remit under charity and company law.
Ruth Jarratt - Chair of Trustees
Ruth is the Director of Policy Development for the Royal Opera House and was previously Fundraising and Marketing Director for Age Concern England. Ruth has also worked with and for smaller charities and has been a trustee of Reach Volunteering, which is largely staffed by volunteers.
As well as being Chair, Ruth advises BioRegional on fundraising matters and is a Director of BioRegional MiniMills.
Graham Dean

Graham's background is in local government, he is also a qualified Town Planner and has been a local authority Councillor.
Graham has a long history of environmental activity, including working as an Environmental Projects manager and Local Agenda 21 Co-ordinator, member of Friends of the Earth and Oxfam, and he has an MSc in Environmental Assessment and Management.
Graham was BioRegional's Chair of Trustees for seven years up to 2011, he is also a Director of BioRegional MiniMills and part of the food project's steering group.
Louise Moore - Legal
Louise specialises in environmental law and heads the Herbert Smith environment, health and safety practice. Louise advises on a wide range of environmental issues (national and international) including nuclear liability, waste, emissions trading, asbestos liability and control, contaminated land and environmental and health and safety risk management.
Her work ranges from advising on specialised regulatory EHS matters to the environmental aspects of projects and corporate transactions. Louise’s work involves environmental issues affecting rail, nuclear, chemical, pharmaceutical, waste, automotive, and oil and gas sector clients among others.
At BioRegional Louise is a special advisor on legal matters.
Sarah Purdy - Treasurer
Sarah is also a chartered accountant and a Director of BioRegional Charcoal Company and BioRegional MiniMills.
David Thornton - Personnel
David has worked in Local Government for 35 years, spending the last 10 as Director of Environmental Services with the London Borough of Sutton. During this time he encouraged Councillors to make Sutton the first Authority to adopt environmental management systems (EMAS) across all departments of the Council.
David started his career in housing management in Lambeth and subsequently became Director of Housing at Sutton. It was this experience that convinced him to encourage the Council to actively support and promote BedZED, bringing together his interest in both affordable and sustainable housing.
In 2001 David set up "The Quality Partnership" and since then has been involved in assessing organisations for the Government’s Charter Mark standard, promoting EMAS, ISO 9000 and general recognised "Best Practice".
Joanna Hills

Jo previously worked at BioRegional in the position of Director of Planning and Performance and company secretary. A civil engineer by background, Jo’s early career focussed on the technical implementation of sustainability; moving onto senior management, programme/project and contract management in more recent years.
She is currently working in local government at Reigate & Banstead Borough Council. When she left BioRegional Jo’s great enthusiasm for our work made her keen to continue to help nurture the success of the organization, so she kindly offered to join the trustee board. Jo is a Director of BioRegional Consulting Ltd.
Dr Robin Stott
Robin is a former consultant physician and medical teacher. He began work on sustainability issues as Medical Director of Lewisham Hospital and led the first ever social, environmental and economic audit of a hospital. He was a founding member of the London Sustainable Development Commission (LSDC) , on which he served for 6 years. He is presently a commissioner on the commission for a sustainable London 2012, and has been the sustainability advisor to the Mayor of Lewisham for the past seven years.
He is closely involved with Medact, a global health charity. Led by its health professional membership, it undertakes education, research and advocacy on the health implications of conflict, development and environmental change. He co chairs the Climate and Health Council, a group committed to engaging health professional to tackle climate change, which WHO identifies as the key public health problem of the 21st century.
Paul Wickham
Paul had a long career with NatWest Bank until moving on to become the Chief Executive of Surrey Wildlife Trust. Paul joined SWT with a brief to help the Trust become a more effective force for nature conservation in Surrey. He negotiated the contract for SWT to take over the management of Surrey County Council’s Countryside Estate and oversaw growth in trust membership from less than 5,000 to more than 20,000 members and annual turnover from £350K to £3.5m.
Paul’s role as a trustee of BioRegional includes being a Director of BioRegional Charcoal Company and Director and Chairman of BioRegional MiniMills.
Paul is Vice Chairman of The Royal Society of Wildlife Trusts and a trustee of Cricket for Change which uses cricket to work with disadvantaged young people.
